I too think sometimes why am I reading, listening, watching all that I do? A lot of it is curiosity, a lot of it is trying to learn new things, but I believe I am also looking for answers (wonderful insight from you!)

What a thought provoking and wonderful column! Loved the references to the people you interviewed for your book, about the kindness of people in spite of it all not being ok, and your ending was so on point. Love, kindness, laughter, kinship, etc are all worthwhile and much better than the alternatives.

I recall a wonderful sequence in "The Eiger Sanction", 2 climbers on the Eiger Nordwand, in a precarious situation. One of them says "If we head that (pointing up the Wall) way, we will be ok." The other looks up, and casually says "I think not. But we shall continue in style"

May we all continue in style.

Thank you. That was lovely.

Have you read any W. G. Sebald? Your essay reminded me of "Rings of Saturn," which I really liked.
