Beautiful essay, captures a lot of my conundrums as well. Not sure what the answer is, even if there is an answer...

That is pretty much the fulcrum on which it all swings: not sure if there is an answer.

Indeed. Good reminder.

This: "Nothing we do happens in a vacuum; all our choices and actions affect others, no matter how much one might want to pretend otherwise."

That's everything, right there. I'm so grateful to have shared some experiences with you in the real world. Here's to many, many more.

Same same same, my friend. So grateful for you.

Big music festivals in general just give me agita -- I'm a curmudgeon, really, I think. I'm sorry that you were in a funk, but I thought of you today when I watched this video: https://vimeo.com/723412594.

Me too! I went to a fun few when I was 16-19 but after that the attraction faded.

That is awesome. I didn't even realize he was doing things on Vimeo. I have to say, I'm so envious of his journey. I wasn't at the beginning. I was just interested, but the longer he did it the more I felt like that's how life should be somehow. Walking the world.

I don't recognize those songs, but I did need to hear them for a minute. If you ever need to hear some strange birds sing, let me know and I'll repay the favor.

Always ready for some new birdsong! I don't really know birds, but I love to listen, and then ask more knowledgeable friends what I'm hearing ;)

This is so peaceful—both the birdsong and your writing. Thank you.

The Extortion Economy is a brilliant series - They've got a awesome team of writers behind that one. The podcast for me also served as a wonderful primer on research-based storytelling.

That is a great point about it. It's just a stellar composition all around. I am amazed at how much the got at in each episode, how much information while maintaining a narrative that kept my attention. Have to say I really like a lot of the single-subject short-series podcasts I've listened to over the past year. Seems to be a new wave that sheds the "let's ramble about this for 3 hours" version.

I’m having a doozy of a bad day. Got done with work and there was a letter from you! In the letter you said you wished I could hear the birdsong and not five minutes later....hear I am! Listening to the homeland and missing you. That concert? Put on by the best friend of one of my bosses, who flies in to town on his private jet every couple of months to take in a show. He always exclaims how uncanny it is that both his friend and I are from the same place! And I always tell him....”ah yes! The place I can’t afford to live because of people like you and your friend!” It’s fun. Thank you for the birdsong, I will listen often. ♥️

It's weird, as I was listening to the concert (forgot to mention I can hear the music at my house, which is some miles even as the crow flies), I was thinking of you, and more so as I wrote this down. Should have intuited somehow that this guy would be flying a private jet to visit your guy. Ban private jets forever is all I can say.

Thompson's book is a real gem, and easier to read than "Dr. Euler's Fabulous Formula," which is also a good contribution.
